Nature is harsh yet the visual experience was designed to uplift us and inspire us. Scenery painting in Vermont is dynamic. Her beauty is in peaks of sun light curling their way around its small hills and valleys. The weather is frantically changeable as exciting visions of light form on hills and valleys. Yet with all its charm it is not magestic. Painting such a place has many challenges which I dare to say do not afflict artists of other terrains. It's quaint beauty is hard to explain. One runs the risk of creating paintings reminisant of Christmas cards with curly hills and white sparkling snow scenes. To find the deeper beauty in this place one needs to focus on the truth of each scene as it appears. One needs to flee any predispostion to stylizing ones art. It is at that moment that the painting can form itself as a reflection of such a delicate landscape as this.

The moodiness of approaching sunlight in this scene has a powerfull impact. Generally the painted image is the result of using opposites to form shape and depth with color and tone. I painted this scene with a deep cadmium orange underpainting.

Early Spring Bushes, 16x20

Paintings from my studio have a peaceful mediitative quality. While they have a beauty it is much different from my open air works. Below is an example of my rare studio works.

At Home , 18x24 inches

In the open air the subject supplies energy to the brushwork and in turn this excitement gives the work its beauty. A painting has many components which have to work together in order to make a whole. If too many things fall out of sychronization in this complex web then it goes sour. Just as in life when problems arise they need to be masterly handled or they can really get out of hand. The painting below is a fine example of how master handling of brushwork created this windy scene.
